A quick human-sized window into the work behind the résumé.

The longer answers, minus the corporate fog machine.

Why did you choose your profession?

My passion for technology and video games began in childhood, starting with a reprogrammable cartridge on a VIC-20. Early exposure to BBS and message boards shaped my understanding of digital communities, even at 1200 baud. Influenced by The Hacker’s Manifesto, I developed a deep appreciation for how technology can be both a tool for innovation and a source of misunderstanding.

Who are your main influences?

I admire Bill Gates for pioneering world-changing technology and leveraging his influence for global philanthropy. Anthony Bourdain’s impact on culinary culture resonates with me, as does his journey of personal struggle beneath his public persona. Ryan Reynolds inspires me as a proud Canadian who has built a successful career while championing charitable initiatives that support Canadian communities.

What is your greatest accomplishment?

Growing a team of engineers from just nine people in a windowless mailroom to powering one of the biggest kids’ gaming phenomena, Webkinz, has been a defining accomplishment. Navigating unprecedented growth, I played a key role in evolving the organization, tackling both technical and operational challenges, and mentoring team members into leadership roles.

What tools do you use?

Throughout my career, I’ve used most tools on the market, but spreadsheets remain a mainstay for launching processes and plans. Jira has been a constant for project management, while newer innovations like Notion have become valuable for documentation as tools evolve from bleeding-edge technology to stable, cost-effective solutions.

What advice would you give to someone just starting in your profession?

Be bold, challenge the status quo, and stand firm when advocating for what’s best for your team and product. Seek out diverse perspectives and let data guide your decisions. Success comes from balancing conviction with adaptability.

What colleagues say when the meeting is over.

"Sean is the kind of person you want running your Technology Department. He has an in-depth understanding of current trends and a natural penchant towards choosing the right emergent technology, not to mention an awesome kill/death ratio. Most of all, you want Sean on your team because he will bring both technological expertise and reliable business sense to all aspects of your company."

Andrew Murphy Software Engineer, Apple

"Sean is one of those rare people who is a pleasure to work with as a colleague, and a pleasure to work for when he's your manager. His dedication and loyalty to his work, his team and his colleagues is exceptional. He's equally comfortable coming up with solutions and long-term plans for his team, as he is rolling up his sleeves to help the team out. He made himself available to everyone, whether that was to help a colleague solve a difficult coding/architecture issue, or to explain complex technical concepts to his non-developer colleagues like me. I enjoyed working with Sean at Ganz, and would gladly welcome the opportunity to work with him again."

Julia Borgini B2B Technical Copywriter & Content Strategist for B2B tech & SaaS

"One of the greatest leaders I've had the privilege of working with. Working on a MMO project isn't easy, and competitors have learned that the hard way. Sean brings to the table inspiring talks and an attitude that makes you want to finish things no matter the challenge ahead.

The secret behind Sean's success as a leader in my opinion is the fact that he can get down and dirty with the actual implementation and code/architect with the best of us. It can be quite the challenge when the commonly technically-illiterate Manager tells you to do something, but not when Sean's the leader, because he knows it can be done and can even help you finish it.

Many leaders can 'talk', but Sean can also 'do.'"

Steve Bendas Senior Executive, xZynga

"Sean is one of the best leaders I've had the privilege of working with. When he inherited our team at Riot, we were in a period of turmoil, facing uncertainty and instability. From day one, he stepped in with clarity, resilience, and a steady hand, guiding us back to a healthy, high-performing state. His ability to build trust, establish structure, and foster a collaborative culture was crucial in turning things around.

What truly sets Sean apart is his unwavering commitment to his team; not just in terms of work but on a personal level as well. He made a genuine effort to get to know each of us beyond our roles, understanding our motivations and aspirations. He actively mentored, advocated, and provided the guidance needed to help each of us take the next step in our careers, no matter where that led.

His impact on our team and organization was profound, and I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to work under his leadership."

Stefan Sain Staff Software Engineer, Riot Games

"I had the privilege of working with Sean for 4 years on the Key Management Service team at AWS after he recruited me to join his team. Sean's exceptional leadership skills were evident in his ability to build and maintain a cohesive team of talented engineers, many of whom remain with the company a decade later – a testament to the positive work environment he created.

Under Sean's guidance, our team successfully delivered multiple complex, customer-facing features while maintaining outstanding operational excellence. What truly sets Sean apart is his rare combination of people management skills and technical depth. He consistently demonstrated the ability to understand intricate technical challenges, effectively advocate for his team's needs, and nurture the growth of new engineers.

Sean's leadership style balances empowering team members with providing the right level of guidance, creating an environment where innovation thrives. I'm grateful for the opportunity to have worked with such an inspiring leader and would highly recommend Sean to any organization seeking exceptional engineering leadership."

Aleks Rudzitis Principal Engineer, AWS

"I had the opportunity to work with Sean at two different points in my career, and each time, he brought a wealth of experience and a steady leadership presence. He was my first manager when I joined Riot in 2013, and I really appreciated the flexibility and mentorship he provided. Having spent much more time in the industry than I had, I learned a ton from him around the challenges of game development and grow as an engineer and scientist.

After his time at Amazon, he returned to Riot to support League of Legends, where he continued to bring a thoughtful, pragmatic approach to problem-solving and team leadership. He has a knack for balancing operational needs with the realities of game development, making him a valuable presence in any team.

Sean is a great leader and mentor, and I'm glad to have had the chance to work with him."
